První vandr/ First hike/ Primero camino III: Villanueva - Barichara

To si nechám líbit!

We somehow rolled out of beds and set off for the trip around eight. There were many people on the streets as well as a huge mess from the previous night. Some of the people looked like they hadn’t slept at all...We ordered a „tinto“ (a classic Colombian not really good coffee) in one of the few opened shops and said good-bye to our host from the previous night who was at the same place for the same reason. The part of our journey from Villanueva to Barichara was quite charming – landscapes, atmosphere, everything. In two hours of walk we arrived in a living museum – that’s how I would call Barichara. Recently renovated houses from colonial era, tourists (both Colombian and foreign) on every corner, I just didn’t see many local people. It’s a nice city, but I was happy that we spent the end of the year in more traditional way and that we didn’t end up in this a little bit stiff place. However it is definitely worth visiting! We enjoyed not only the views from the viewpoint close to the city, but also a freshly made corn “arepa”, ice-cream and coffee in one very interesting cafeteria. However many shops were closed that day because it was bank holidays. From the very same reason we also couldn’t count on the local public transport – there were no buses operating. We decided to try our luck, start walking and hitch-hike rather than staying in town and waiting for some stray taxi. And we were lucky, after few minutes a young couple from Bogota took us until San Gil. There we walked directly to the bus stop to check if there are some buses. And we were really lucky again, right at the moment when we arrived at the stop there was a bus going to Bucaramanga. Although for that I haven’t really seen San Gil so I should return for a longer time.

We arrived to Bucaramanga in the evening, tired and happy...

If it is true that what you do the first day in the new year you’ll do for the rest of the year I am a happy person!
